All of Demon Turf's characters and enemies are composed entirely of 2D sprites

If you’ve ever looked at early ‘90s first-person-shooters and thought, “I wish this tech was applied to a 3D platformer,” then boy do I have a game for you. Demon Turf’s eye-catching visual hook is its combination of 2D sprite work in a fully 3D platformer. This immediately brought to mind two questions for me. Is there substance behind the bold artistic choices? And would a 2D sprite be able to convey the tactile feedback necessary for a fluid and satisfying 3D platformer?

That’s not necessarily a compliment. While the concept of 2D characters and environments in a 3D world is neat, it’s also pretty ugly. Given that Demon Turf features, er, demons and is set in hell, a lot of that ugliness is intentional, so your feelings on it will come down to aesthetic preference – but personally, I just found it a pain to look at.

Once you start diving into each turf's various stages, Demon Turf falls into some familiar rhythms for 3D platforming fans. Moving platforms, traps, bottomless pits, you name it. To summarise, be prepared to do a lot of jumping, whether that's double jumping, wall jumping or turning into a bat once per jump to hover for extra precision. Did I mention jumping?

Boss fights, on the other hand, tend to fare a bit better. These feel less forced into the middle of stages and more intentionally designed. They also make great use of the new abilities Beebz gains in each area. While still not as good as the platforming itself, the bosses are generally well structured, and feature a great combo of 2D and 3D art to make up the giant enemies.

The music, too, sounds like a late ‘90s invention. While I don’t inherently hate that, there are only so many times you can hear record scratches before it all gets a little grating, and Demon Turf hits that point within its first ten minutes.

Flaws aside, Demon Turf pulled me in as a long-time platforming fan. Thanks to that competitive gameplay, great sense of humour and appealing art style, Fabraz’s latest stands apart from the rest of its 3D platformer competition. If you’re after a new jumping fix, I’d recommend it.
